Laboratory for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology

Welcome to the Laboratory for SoTL in Psychology!

Within the Laboratory for SoTL in Psychology, we investigate psychology pedagogy issues (broadly defined) from the post-secondary through graduate level of education with an emphasis on understanding and enhancing the cultural competency of both teachers and students of psychology. We examine factors that affect the teaching and learning processes in psychology education. Projects in the lab have included varied topics such as: developing instruments to assess the cultural competency of psychology professors; college students' perceived level of intellectual safety in the classroom; models of scholarship in the teaching of psychology; diversity issues in the classroom; and, teaching assistant training in psychology. My lab is located at W249 Lagomarcino Hall on the ISU campus. The current lab co-managers are: Amanda Buduris and Julio Rivas.

Undergraduate students who are interested in working in the lab should contact lab co-mananger Julio Rivas via email (rivas@iastate.edu) to indicate their interest. Students accepted to work in the lab can expect to gain IRB certification training, learn basics about the Qualtrics data management system, the effective use of search engines (PsychInfo, PubMed), how to best conduct literature searches, as well as gaining experience with the basics of SPSS statistics and interpretation. Students with greater experience and skill can also find opportunities to gain co-authorships on conference poster presentations.
